Line-up check 2015: Hungary

by | Apr 16, 2015 | 2015 reviews, Uncategorized

Hungary achieved one of its best results ever when András Kállay-Saunders came 5th in last year’s Eurovision final with his song Running. The Hungarian national final, A Dal, remains a huge local success even in 2015. Will its winner, Boggie, manage to reach a similar great result as her predecessor?

For international A Dal observers at least, the selection of Boggie left many fans quite puzzled, as the competition had – so people say – more obvious options for Eurovision. Also, for non-Hungarian ears, the name “Boggie” doesn’t exactly sound suitable for a lovely, gracile young lady (which Boggie surely is), but that shouldn’t play any further role.

The actual hot topic around this entry is the lyrics. Just like last year, Hungary again sends an entry with a serious background: Wars For Nothing is about wars – or about peace – however you want to see it. Critics find the lyrics too crude, too direct, too cheesy. Surely, native English speakers can’t really manage to ignore them, but I wonder how many Eurovision viewers (and voters) will really a) follow, b) understand, and c) care.

Of course, we could now dig out the already dusted Belgium 2014, for the sake of a bold comparison (no pun intended), but I guess Boggie has more than a slight advantage over Axel Hirsoux. Don’t ask me why. I just have that gut feeling.

In its nature as a calm, tranquil song, Wars For Nothing is strikingly different to the rest of this year’s line-up. It stands there as a (welcome) anachronism, as a countermovement, and – referring to its context – even as an outright memorial. The song comes without any bombastic peace pathos, unlike some other peace anthems in recent Eurovision history, but rather transports the lightness that was the selling point of the young Nicole, or the vibe of Croatia 1993 – if it can be compared to anything at all.

Most importantly, it’s a nice composition, sung by a lovely voice and a charming singer, and that alone is a good reason why it could surprise. However, it probably won’t achieve a new record for Hungary on the scoreboard.
