Belgium: Hooverphonic – The Wrong Place
Felix: Again, can’t compare to last year, because I had to take that year off. Once again, I’m approaching an entry with fresh ears and without preconceptions. But it doesn’t take long into the first verse until I am heavily reminded of Roxette’s “Wish I Could Fly”. By lyrics, by melody, by style. And while there’s absolutely no plagiarism happening there, the similarities are – for me – crystal clear.
This doesn’t apply to the chorus though. In Belgium 2021, the chorus stretches a bit like a long session at the dentist, and I’m not fond of some parts of the composition, but in general, this one is on the “like” side of my personal scoreboard – be it despite or because of my associations with said Roxette hit from 1999.
But now the other question is: How far can this go in the contest? I sadly don’t see much potential there. While parts of it might be pleasant even for a wider audience, there’s nothing that will make… people… vote. No catchy chorus. No room for outstanding vocals. And probably no personality either, but I won’t go there before I’ve seen any rehearsal. A qualification will depend on luck and enough Roxette fans.
Martin: Whereas I see its chances very differently – I think the juries will love this, at least in the semi-final, and top three on that side of the vote is already enough to qualify. Televoters should be a bit cooler towards it, though, as am I. It’s a classy three minutes, though.
Shi: I’m Team Martin on this – definite jury appeal – I’d guess top 3 with them in the semi, at least.. For televoters, as always it will depend on how it works on stage and on screen. It also stands out musically in this semi, especially where it is in the draw.
