France has chosen – but will it be a ‘Merci’ or a ‘Monsieur’?

by | Jan 28, 2018 | Eurovision

France has selected its entry for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. At the culmination of the three-week Destination Eurovision selection process, “Mercy” by the duo Madame Monsieur proved to be the clear favourite of the televoting public while also attracting enough jury support to be the overall winner.

In a year when the Eurovision Song Contest will be themed around Portugal’s seafaring past, it is perhaps appropriate that a song about present-day migrants on the Mediterranean should be appearing in the competition.

But how will the French entry fare on the scoreboard in Lisbon? The omens are mixed. One of the contest’s most famous early winners, after all, had a “Merci” theme to it…

…but a subsequent attempt to send a “Madame” to the contest proved unsuccessful…

and the appearance of a “Monsieur” was, let’s be honest, a bit of a scoreboard disaster.

Whatever the outcome for this year’s French entry, we will find out more at the grand final of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, for which France is automatically qualified as one of the ‘big five’ countries.
