Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät will represent Finland at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Aina mun pitää”!
The band had already hit the headlines around Europe in the run-up to the final of tonight’s Finnish preselection, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, because of their unusual background – the members all being adults with learning disabilities.
Having qualified from the semi-finals in the three previous weeks, nine songs entered tonight’s competition, but in reality there were only ever two contenders – PKN and instrument-toting boyband Satin Circus. The latter put up a brave fight in the voting, which was partly jury-based but mostly determined by televoting, but in the end the disabled punkers took the title by a fairly comfortable margin.
In the #esc chat, our clear favourite of the night was “Heart Of Light” by Opera Skaala, with an average score of 9.57 out of 10. Meanwhile, our chatters placed PKN in 7th place out of the nine entries with an average of just 3.00.
One notable fact about “Aina mun pitää” – which means “I Always Have To” – is the length of the song. Coming in at barely a minute and a half, if it is not altered between now and May, it will become the shortest ever song to be performed on the Eurovision stage.
Either way, there is no question that PKN will continue to hit the headlines over the coming months. What impact that has on their result in Vienna remains to be seen, but what we do know is that Finland will compete in the first half of the first semi-final on Tuesday 19 May and their performance will look something like this:
