Did anyone really believe otherwise? Saturday night saw the grand final of Melodifestivalen 2012, and as predicted all along, it was Loreen who came out on top with the bookies’ favourite “Euphoria”.
Things were all but tied up after Loreen comfortably won the international jury vote, but with the televotes being converted into percentages these days, a clear win for Danny Saucedo’s “Amazing” would have put the cat among the pigeons.
In the end, though, it was plain sailing for Loreen – and with the top two accounting for easily half of all televotes, the rest of the field were feeding off scraps, hence the slightly surprising results further down the leaderboard!
In the wake of the news, Sweden immediately leapfrogged Russia, Denmark and Serbia to become the betting favourite for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. Loreen will take to the stage in the second half of the second semi-final on Thursday 24 May. If she qualifies for the final, a result similar to that of Eric Saade would probably more than satisfy most Swedes, for all the Eurofans are screaming for victory.
And perhaps more importantly, in this anniversary year for the Swedish “semi-final” system, a song from the first semi has finally won Melodifestivalen!
Stay tuned for more of our blog posts from Stockholm – we’re here till Monday! A full analysis of the results, including from a betting perspective, will also follow in due course. But for now: Euphoria!
