Norway and Iceland narrow the field

by | Jan 22, 2012 | Uncategorized

A seriously Nordic Saturday night line-up saw the first semi-final in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix followed by the second of three heats in the Icelandic selection process, Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins.

All in all, 13 songs became five as the pair of northern nations took a step closer towards choosing their entries for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May.

NORWAY

The Norwegians sprang a little surprise by not only announcing the three qualifiers for the Melodi Grand Prix final on 11 February, but also revealing the order in which they finished in tonight’s semi. Whether this means the 2nd- and 3rd-placers are already effectively out of the running for the victory is anyone’s guess, but in any case, the lucky three – in reverse order – were:

3rd Reidun Sæther – High on love
2nd The Carburetors – Don’t touch the flame
1st Nora Foss Al-Jabri – Somewhere beautiful

ICELAND

Meanwhile, in Europe’s most north-westerly corner, five songs went into battle for two places in the grand final of Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins – also to be held on 11 February. The qualifiers were announced as:

Regína Ósk Óskarsdóttir – Hjartað brennur
Simbi og Hrútspungarnir – Hey

Söngvakeppni Sjónvarps
