The winner of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, and thus the Danish entrant for ESC 2012, is Soluna Samay. Once more this season, the #esc chatroom’s favourite won a national final! The decision came as a bit of a surprise to some, but for those who have no idea about the other choices Denmark had, this one seems like a “proper” Danish entry.
And at the same time, funnily enough, it fills a big gap that Denmark previously had in its Eurovision portfolio. You have loads of schlager, of course – some rather cheap, some really fun. The range in this category is massive, from Hot Eyes and Tommy Seebach to Chanée & N’evergreen. Then you have this less schlagerish but more “swinging” pop style like “All Night Long” or “Talking To You”. And then, on the other side, there are those mysterious Danish tunes that live in a dimension beyond time, like “Dansevise” and “Fra Mols til Skagen”.
Is it just me or was there a gap? I, at least, can’t really recall a song from Denmark that can be put into the same box as “Should’ve Known Better”. And still this seems like an obvious, natural Danish entry. It’s neither cheap nor a masterpiece, neither offensive nor an obvious fanwa.. favourite. It’s just a proper mid-tempo pop song, and with its natural charm, it’s good at what it does.
Thanks, Denmark, for this nice surprise!
