For only the second time in its history, Finland will be represented by a Swedish-language entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Pernilla Karlsson won the final of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, the Finnish preselection process, with her song “När jag blundar” (which translates as “When I close my eyes”).
She beat out her superfinal rivals Stig (“Laululeija”) and Ville Eetvartti (“Lasikaupunki”), who had previously been selected by televoting from the six remaining entries in the grand final.
Karlsson has apparently already announced her intention to keep the song in Swedish when she hits Baku in May – and she will be hoping to do considerably better than her language counterparts Beat, who finished joint-last in 1990 with “Fri?”.
In any case, “När jag blundar” will be the first Swedish-language entry to feature on the ESC stage since Jill Johnson performed “Kärleken är” for Sweden in beautiful Birmingham in 1998!
