Wurst second-best as Trackshittaz wiggle their way to Baku

by | Feb 25, 2012 | Uncategorized

Austria selected its entry for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest on Friday night and, one year after taking the runner-up slot behind Nadine Beiler, it was Trackshittaz who came out on top with their song “Woki mit deim Popo” – roughly translated as “Shake Your Ass”.

Despite a highly varied field of 10 entries, there were no great surprises when the superfinal entrants were announced, with Trackshittaz going head-to-head with the runaway favourite with the bookmakers, Conchita Wurst (“That’s What I Am”).

And it could hardly have been closer – in the end, the bottom-wiggling routine from the rap duo, consisting of Lukas Plöchl and Manuel Hoffelner, took the prize with 51% of the public vote.

Beiler herself was one of many Austrian Eurovision stars present and interviewed as part of the high-profile – and long! – show, where she was joined by everyone from Marianne Mendt to Eric Papilaya.

Trackshittaz will perform in the second half of the first semi-final in Baku in May, although it remains to be seen whether the EBU will have a word in their ear about the band’s name and the somewhat raunchy nature of their dance routine. Terry Wogan would have had a heart attack – although we suspect he would have enjoyed the view, too…
