Ég-citement in Iceland as Eyþór excels

by | Feb 3, 2013 | Uncategorized

The Icelandic entry for the 2013 Eurovision song contest will be “Ég á líf”, written by Örlygur Smári and Pétur Örn Guðmundsson and performed by Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson.

Eyþór triumphed in a superfinal of the “Ég” songs, getting the nod from the televoters ahead of Unnur Eggertsdóttir with “Ég syng!”.

Earlier in the evening, 2003 Icelandic representative Birgitta Haukdal had failed to make it through to the final round of a show that also featured Selma and Euroband proving their fanboy credentials by performing a medley of “Making Your Mind Up”, “Ein bisschen Frieden”, “Gente di mare” and “Euphoria” in the interval.

RUV always provides for the option of translating the winning song into English, though there could be a case for arguing that the dark ballad “Ég á líf” works better in the more mysterious-sounding Icelandic language.

Magni Ásgeirsson won the #esc chat vote (with an average score of 7.33 points out of 10) but, as the producers’ wildcard entry for the final, was obviously always unlikely to repeat that feat in the real event. He was followed by Jógvan & Stefanía (7.03) and Birgitta (6.61), with Eyþór getting our 5th place.

We’re sure he won’t mind too much, though, as he now prepares to go into battle in the first half of the second semi-final on Thursday 16 May!
