“Molitva” by Marija Šerifović, the victorious Serbian entry in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, won tonight’s special event marking the 10th anniversary of the #esc chat and the annual ChatVote, beating off strong competition from Loreen and Margaret Berger.

The first day of June 2004 – at 20:36 and 54 seconds (CET), to be precise – saw the launch of #esc, a chatroom for fans of the Eurovision Song Contest. And we have been celebrating that fact in various ways over the past week, including looking back at the past decade of the ChatVote, #esc’s popular annual voting event on the year’s Eurovision entries.

Every day, we asked whether some of the last-placed ChatVote countries would have done better if they had taken a different option that was available to them at the time. This allowed us to revisit treats including Lise Darly in an English “pop-rock” version, Gipsy.cz‘s other entry in the 2009 Czech final, Esma giving a unique lyrical interpretation of the song Josh Dubovie ultimately sang at ESC, Senit’s follow-up single to “Stand By”, and the song Alyona Lanskaya was going to take to Baku in 2012 until the President of Belarus intervened personally to disqualify her.

But tonight was the main event, as we welcomed chatters into #esc to watch together all of the 10 winners and (after we put it to the vote) the 10 runners-up from the previous ChatVote competitions. We asked for their marks out of 10 after each song, and after a fun evening with lots of diverse opinions represented, the full and final result was as follows:

1. SERBIA 2007: Marija Šerifović – Molitva – average score 8.70
2. SWEDEN 2012: Loreen – Euphoria – 8.55
3. NORWAY 2013: Margaret Berger – I Feed You My Love – 8.40
4. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 2009: Regina – Bistra voda – 7.44
5. GERMANY 2010: Lena – Satellite – 7.30
6. ITALY 2012: Nina Zilli – L’amore è femmina (Out Of Love) – 7.10
7. ISRAEL 2014: Mei Finegold – Same Heart – 7.00
8. GERMANY 2006: Texas Lightning – No No Never – 6.72
9. HUNGARY 2011: Kati Wolf – What About My Dreams – 6.67
10. BELARUS 2007: Koldun – Work Your Magic – 6.56
11. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 2008: Laka – Pokušaj – 6.50 (received more top marks)
12. ARMENIA 2014: Aram Mp3 – Not Alone – 6.50
13. TURKEY 2010: maNga – We Could Be The Same – 6.35
14. HUNGARY 2005: NOX – Forogj, világ! – 6.17
15. NORWAY 2009: Alexander Rybak – Fairytale – 6.06
16. SWITZERLAND 2005: Vanilla Ninja – Cool Vibes – 5.77
17. DENMARK 2013: Emmelie de Forest – Only Teardrops – 5.50
18. ESTONIA 2011: Getter Jaani – Rockefeller Street – 5.10
19. SWEDEN 2008: Charlotte Perrelli – Hero – 4.61
20. BELGIUM 2006: Kate Ryan – Je t’adore – 4.22

So it was worth including the runners-up in tonight’s competition: Marija from Serbia narrowly failed to win the ChatVote back in 2007, but she certainly got her revenge tonight!

At the end of this week of celebration, there’s nothing left for us to say except one more “thank you” to all those who voted tonight – and, indeed, all those who’ve made the past decade of #esc so special. We look forward to enjoying the next 10 years and more together with all of you!
