Today: Iceland decides, Italy might too – plus five more shows

by | Feb 14, 2015 | Uncategorized

Tonight marks one of the busiest “Super Saturdays” of the 2015 Eurovision season, with no fewer than seven shows for ESC fans around the continent to juggle and navigate!

Following two semi-finals, Iceland will select its entry for Vienna in the final of Söngvakeppnin Sjónvarpsins. A 50-50 mixture of televoting and an expert jury will narrow down the seven finalists to a superfinal of two, before televoting alone is used to determine the winner.

Italy marks the end of another marathon Sanremo Festival with the final night tonight. The winner of the competition, which will be determined by a combination of juries and televoting, will be given the option to represent the country at ESC 2015 – either with the winning song or another entry – but will not be obliged to do so. As such, we don’t yet know if the identity of the Italian entry for Vienna will be revealed tonight, although there has occasionally been a special announcement during the festival show itself.

Estonia continues with Eesti Laul 2015 as the second of two semi-finals is held. Ten songs will compete tonight, five of which will qualify for the final on 21 February. The results will be determined by a 50/50 combination of televoting and jury.

Finland will host the second of three semi-finals of UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu). Six songs will compete, three of which will qualify for the final on 28 February. The outcome will be based on televoting alone.

Hungary progresses to the first semi-final of A Dal. In tonight’s show, nine songs will be performed. In the first round of voting, two qualifiers will be determined by the combination of scores from each judge and an aggregate score from a public SMS and mobile app vote. In the second round of voting, the remaining seven entries that were not in the initial top two will face an SMS and mobile app vote in order to determine two additional qualifiers. The Hungarian final will be held on 28 February.

The selection odyssey in Lithuania reaches the song selection stage. The three remaining songs will be performed and the favourite song – as determined by a jury and televoting – will go forward to the final on 21 February, where the performer will be selected from the three remaining candidates.

And last but not least, Sweden continues to celebrate Melodifestivalen 2015 tonight, with the second semi-final being held in Malmö. Another seven acts will compete for two direct tickets to the grand final on 14 March. The entries that finish in 3rd and 4th position will be sent to the 2nd chance round, “Andra Chansen”, on 7 March. The bottom three will be eliminated.

You can find all the details of tonight’s shows in the tabs on the right-hand side. Further down, you can toggle between “Today” and “Calendar” view.

Don’t forget to join us in the #esc chat, where we’ll be watching, talking about and voting on the shows.
Tonight’s songs (except Lithuania) will also compete to qualify for our own SongHunt. The scores given to each song by our chatters will have an influence on which songs will qualify for the next heat, to be launched tomorrow night.
