No fewer than four songs will be added to the list of entrants for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest tonight, as ESC fans get to enjoy another “Super Saturday” in the busy on-season!
Kicking off proceedings early in the evening is Moldova, where two semi-finals were held during the past week to determine the 16 finalists in O Melodie Pentru Europa. A 50/50 combination of jury and televoting will decide the country’s representative for Vienna.
In Finland, the 2015 edition of UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) reaches its climax after three semi-finals in the previous weeks. A total of nine finalists will compete to represent the Nordic nation at ESC. Televoting accounts for a weighty 90% of the overall vote, with the remaining 10% coming from so-called “citizens’ juries” – selected members of specific groups of society, including “taxi drivers”, “kids” and “LGBT people”. Whether they can stop the journey of hot favourites Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät to the ESC stage remains to be seen.
After reaching the final in Copenhagen, Slovenia repeats its tried-and-tested EMA format to find an entry for Vienna. Eight songs will compete for the golden ticket. An expert jury will vote first to select two superfinalists. A 100% public vote will then choose the winner from these two potential entries.
The show with the latest start time tonight is in Hungary, where A Dal reaches its grand final. Unlike the somewhat convoluted jury/televoting combinations used in the previous rounds of the preselection format, this evening’s proceedings should be relatively straightforward. The jury will vote on the eight entries to select four superfinalists, before a 100% public vote selects the Hungarian entry from these four remaining candidates.
And last but not least, Sweden continues to celebrate Melodifestivalen 2015 tonight, with the fourth semi-final being held in Örebro. Another seven acts will compete for two direct tickets to the grand final on 14 March, including early-season bookmakers’ favourite Måns Zelmerlöw. The entries that finish in 3rd and 4th position will be sent to the 2nd chance round, “Andra Chansen”, on 7 March. The bottom three will be eliminated.
