In the last ten years, Belgium has only qualified for the final on two occasions, in 2010 and 2013. Indeed, it has only achieved one single top five placing (Sanomi, 2nd place in 2003) since winning with Sandra Kim in 1986.

This year, it’s RTBF’s turn again to select the artist for Belgium, and after Roberto Bellarosa’s 12th place in the 2013 final, they have once again decided for a young male solo singer who previously participated in The Voice Belgique.

Loïc Nottet is described as a “complete artist” (eurovision.tv), meaning he hasn’t only written the music of his entry, but is also involved in the choreography and stage visuals for his Vienna performance. He describes himself as “detached from reality” (eurovision.tv). One of his biggest musical idols is the Australian singer Sia.

Now that I get to discuss his song, Rhythm Inside, things become more complicated. This is one good example where my own opinion is diametrically opposed to my prediction. Let’s begin with my view: I don’t like the song. I experience the music as uncomfortable, disturbing, sharp and repulsive. Loïc surely is a good singer and a capable artist (and he isn’t exactly unattractive), but his product, this song, is nothing I would listen to voluntarily.

However, now that I’m getting to my verdict: It’s clear that this is by far the most original song in this year’s Eurovision line-up, and that’s the other side of my line-up check for Belgium. This doesn’t sound like anything else in this year, nor in previous years. It’s new, fresh, professional and innovative. It will stand out, a lot, and if there is one song that can be dangerous for Sweden, then it’s this one.

In short: I dislike it a lot, but it’s clearly a strong contender for victory.
