Vienna Blog – Part 1: The Arrival

by | May 24, 2015 | 2015 Vienna Blog, Eurovision

As part of our live coverage from ESC 2015 by Felix and Martin, our website featured a rolling live blog throughout our time in Vienna, the content of which is reproduced below and in the other “Vienna Blog” posts!

Sunday 10 May, 23:58
Vienna calling! MartinF here – safely arrived in this year’s host city, accreditation collected, and ready to start blogging from the rehearsals tomorrow morning! Moldova awaits – and so does our blog…

Stay tuned! 🙂

Here’s the press centre at the Stadthalle in Vienna, slowly filling up ahead of the first rehearsals today!

Monday 11 May, 14:34
Time for a lunch break. The tea is “cheery” and so are we!

Monday 11 May, 17:02
I don’t see this being too much of a problem, but thanks for the warning anyway, press centre cafĂ© people!

Tuesday 12 May, 00:59
No Euroclub until Sunday, but there’s a different venue every night for accredited press and the general public alike to enjoy. Which is good, because it means we actually get out and see some of the city! Tonight’s adventure took us to the Museumsquartier, a seriously cool part of town surrounded by some impressive Viennese architecture. A few hours of Eurovision dancefloor hits were followed by DJs playing – gasp – real music, which is when we made our exit via the artily-photographed tram below, but it was a decent warm-up for the week ahead. A journalist was buzzing around doing interviews and the city already seems to be pretty enthusiastic about this little contest of ours!

The lunch options in the press centre are many and varied. Today I’ve opted for a tofu and vegetable curry with rice and a bottle of Almdudler, the local soft drink that claims to be herb-y but basically just tastes of sugar. All good fuel for this afternoon’s live blogging!

On a Danube river and canal cruise with friends and – of course – the Lithuanian and Estonian artists. Vaidas is getting a lot of attention. Stig is wearing polka-dot shorts.

Wednesday 13 May, 00:35
Just back from the first of the “Eurovision Jam Nights”, this one at the legendary U4 nightclub. Not too many ESC artists in sight before we left, but the drummer from Voltaj joined the house band for a rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain” before the Serbian backing girls (and guy) gave us a take on “Valerie”. The house band then cleared the stage for all of Voltaj to play one of their big hits, including a surprisingly successful attempt to get the crowd to sing along with the chorus!

Wednesday 13 May, 12:28
The San Marino promo offensive is already in full swing…

Wednesday 13 May, 15:50
Lynda is here – in dessert form, at least…

Thursday 14 May, 12:23
…and the escgo! Vienna team is complete now that Felix has joined Martin in the press centre!

Thursday 14 May, 12:41
Did we ever have a public swimming pool that close to the press entrance?

Thursday 14 May, 14:36
