“One Last Breath” to ESC for Greece

by | Mar 4, 2015 | Uncategorized

The Greek entry at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest will be “One Last Breath” by Maria-Elena Kiriakou!

Kiriakou, who has experience in winning televised contests following her victory in The Voice Greece, triumphed over her four competitors in a 50/50 jury and public vote tonight.

“One Last Breath” is a fairly straightforward ballad, a genre that ethnopop-friendly Greece has not sent to the contest particularly often in recent years – although that does leave less room for inadvisable choreography, so probably no trampolines this year.

Of greater interest is the singer’s name: Already, the usual transliteration issues mean she is being referred to as either “Maria-Elena” or “Maria-Helena” depending on where you look. Back in 2005, we solved this problem in our #esc chat by referring to the Greek entrant as “Ehlena Paparizou” all season long, thus keeping everybody happy. The recurrence of this issue may be the most fun thing about this year’s Greek entry, so we’re not ruling out taking the same approach again.

At ESC 2015, Greece will compete in the first half of the first semi-final on Tuesday 19 May. You can view the Greek entry below:
