Tonight’s German final saw an unprecedented scandal, as winner Andreas Kümmert rejected his right to represent Germany in Vienna in the minute after he was declared the winner! He forwarded the honour to 2nd-placed Ann Sophie with her song “Black Smoke“, which now seems to be the German entry for 2015. However, we might not have heard the last word about this!
Immediately after Kümmert announced his decision, a strong booing emerged all around the audience in the arena in Hanover, and Ann Sophie didn’t seem to feel too comfortable with the situation either! Host Barbara Schöneberger, herself slightly irritated, tried to persuade Andreas Kümmert to go to Vienna after all, asking the audience for support – but in the end he refused to accept the voters’ selection and their mandate. So the winner of tonight’s televote will not take part at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015!
In the end, the perplexed Ann Sophie – who even had to ask the host “Fahr ich jetzt nach Wien?” (“Am I going to Vienna?”) – found herself on stage as the actual German entrant, as the intro of her “winning” song reprise literally rolled over her.
