Denmark sends “Only Teardrops” over the Øresund!

by | Jan 27, 2013 | Uncategorized

Denmark has chosen its entry for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden.

In a typically extravagant national final hosted at the Boxen Arena in the town of Herning, 19-year-old Emmelie de Forest was selected by the televoters and an expert jury to represent the country with her song “Only Teardrops”.

From the ten entries performed in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013 – perhaps unfairly described by some as “nine identical pop songs and Brinck” – it was de Forest, Simone (“Stay Awake”) and Mohamed (“Unbreakable”) who battled their way through to the superfinal.

After some interval entertainment from the Brotherhood of Man, Herreys and Johnny Logan (the latter rather awkwardly proclaiming his love for the Danish audience on several occasions) plus some kids performing a number that can only be described as Eurovision School Musical, the five jurors each gave their votes in turn – after which “Only Teardrops” and “Unbreakable” were dead level in the lead, with “Stay Awake” still very much in contention.

However, the televoters were quite certain of who they wanted to see again in Malmö, with around 50% of them plumping for Emmelie’s mid-tempo pop number and giving her the overall victory.

The winning song certainly has a decent pedigree, being co-written by Lisa Cabble, whose previous contributions to ESC – “Fra Mols til Skagen” (1995) and “New Tomorrow” (2011) – both finished in 5th place. Will Emmelie enjoy similar success in Sweden?

Our chatters certainly hope so, as “Only Teardrops” won the #esc chat vote, receving a quite impressive average score of 7.85 out of 10. Emmelie was followed by Kate Hall (7.33) and Frederikke (7.31) – whereas the other two actual superfinalists were rather less fondly regarded by our chatroom crew. Thanks to esc-chat.com website editor Danny for counting the votes!
